19 Jan Las Buitreras Week II, 03.Jan – 10.Jan 2015
On the 3rd of January we welcomed a group of anglers for the second week of the season at our lodge, with six of the guests coming from the US and one from Sweden.
There were quite high expectations from the returning anglers, knowing this is the time when one of the largest runs of sea trout come in the Río Gallegos system, but a clear delay in this run made fishing harder than normal. There were fish rolling and moving all over, but not in the mood for taking, normal behavior for the running fish. It was a few days left for them till they were able to settle in the different pools…
Still the group managed to land 43 fish (sea run browns over 4lb) while the windy conditions and the low water level kept them working hard for the goal of catching the fish of a lifetime.
Because of this water conditions (-10cm / gin clear) the fishing was extremely technical, avoiding wading as much as possible, using up to 20’ long leaders and tiny little nymphs, and focusing on the last hour of the day.
The results still were very positive as for Ken, being top rod with 10 fish or Larry landing a 15lb chrome in Old Bridge pool.
The end of the week was marked by a sudden raise in the river that led to the beginning of week #3 with a first day with 21 sea trout caught and 1 of them over 20lb! More to come soon…
