It is hard to believe that the Lakshadweep Islands, formerly known as the Laccadives, have remained widely untouched from tourism. The islands are the northernmost of the Lakshadweep-Maldives-Chagos group of islands, which are the tops of a vast undersea mountain range, the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge. A mere 1 1/2 hour flight from mainland India is all that it takes to set foot into the softest coral sand you will ever experience. Stepping of the plane and you find yourself in the famous ”Giant Trevally triangle” of the indian Ocean, the arabian Sea. The Lakshadweep islands are the eastern border of this body of water that is known for its massive GT’s. Just on the other side of the Arabian sea, you will find Southern Oman as well as Socotra, both known for their unimaginable fish size on heavy popping equipment.
The Giant Trevally, often abbreviated as GT, is one of the most desired fish species on this planet. And not without reason, since these rulers of the reef guarantee merciless topwater strikes, followed by pain-in-the-back fights. Equipment, fisherman and fish will have to do their very best not to be the weakest link.
But there is more, much more! The houseboat will bring you from location to location. This means a maximum amount of fishing time and new fishing grounds, exploring the area with small skiffs. Fresh hunting grounds every day, where different techniques can be used to catch different fish species. Casting poppers for GT, Groupers or other riff inhabitants, but also speed jigging for Dogtooth Tuna and countless other species can be done. Or maybe do some trolling along the reefs and steep drop-offs. Even Sailfish and Black Marlin are in close proximity, ready to be caught on spinning tackle. Endless possibilities and only six days to discover them…
To top this all off, there’s also good opportunities for fly-casting for GT, Triggerfish and others, while wading shallow sand flats. Imagine stalking a twenty kilo shade haunting the flat, get your fly in front of it and then hold on to your rod and reel as an angry GT tries to destroy it all.
