Sean Mc Cullough:
Went on a one off fishing trip of a lifetime to Las Buitreras in 2008, as I did not catch the magical 20lb seatrout, I went back in 2009 (20lb) 2010 (22lb), and 2011 23.5 lbs. The big sea trout, the lodge, the wildlife and of course the staff and the guides make this place a truly wonderful experience.
Thank you my friends,

I have been fishing far off destinations for the last thirty years. I have been fortunate to have fished all over the globe. Fishing some of the most wonderful places and having caught some great fish. But to the point, I have never returned to any of those destinations as often as I have to Las Buitreras on the Rio Gallegos. The reason, well its simple, a fishing trip abroad is about so many things, the more things that are right the more you remember the trip, the more you want to return.
At Las Buitreas the Lodge is like home, the food is fantastic, the guides are like friends with fishing knowledge to surprise even the most experienced of anglers and the quality of the fishing will take your breath away. What more could you want from your trip. I cannot wait to return.

Why do I travel unerringly South for thousands of miles every February to fish on this river and stay at Las Buitreras? I think I am a discerning fisherman and this river gives me everything I dream about (and more) when it comes to sea trout (sewin in Wales) fishing. I have fished for sea trout for 50 years but the pleasure this place has given me in the last 10 is really difficult to quantify.
The estancia, the top class guides, the river, great fish which are not too easy and of course the freedom which 40 km of river gives one. Any serious angler who is not hamstrung purely by numbers should really try this as I do consider it to be a destination at the very top of the league for the serious sea trout angler. The memories will always be with you and the river will call you back time and again as it has done to me!

For me the Rio Gallegos has everything that I want from a game fishery. This is now my fifth year on the river and I am still trying to work it out. The fishing is not always as easy as you might think, and you have to work for the fish, but I do enjoy that challenge. It is great fly water; with many interesting and varied named pools that are narrow and wide, fast and shallow, deep and slow, and plenty of others in between. There is over thirty miles of fishing, and it is very lightly fished, the pools are carefully rotated and also well rested and you are driven everywhere.
The endless beautiful scenery, geology and unusual wildlife are a sight to behold. The incredible sunsets and a big sky are just stunning; the clear sky at night with a billion stars due to no light pollution has to be seen to be believed, and the chill out factor is just fantastic. The Rio Gallegos and the Las Buitreras Lodge is a wonderful partnership. In the accommodation you feel that is your home while you are there, it is comfortable, the wine and food are excellent. Five hours fishing in the morning after a great breakfast, and then followed by a large dinner, a siesta and then five hours fishing in the evening, is the perfect balance.
There is an ample tackle shop with all you may require and spare tackle if needed. The expert staff at the lodge are so welcoming, warm and friendly; you are very well looked after during your stay. The local guides at Buitreras are second to none; they have fished the Gallegos all their life and know the river like no one else. They are very good at putting anglers with differing abilities in the right pools, and they are themselves also very good fly casters. It is a long journey down to the other end of the planet, but if you like a very different experience and aggressive sea trout of such size and quality, it is well worth the trip.

It’s not only the quality of the fishing, and it’s not only the nature or the infinite high skies. I am sure the cuisine, wine and friendly staff at LB is a part of it. I`m an addict, cannot stop thinking about Las Buiteras. Been there five times and I have only one regret: Why did I not discover this fly-fishing heaven on earth earlier. Have I lost valuable investment in fly-fishing hours on poorer places – probably. But that won’t happen again. For the future I will do safe investments – I’ll go down to my favorite flyfishing location: Rio Gallegos and Estancia Las Buiteras.
Tight lines,

I have now visited Las Buitreras on four occasions and a year’s fishing just would not be the same without it! Argentina itself is a wonderful place with wonderful people, food and wine. Las Buitreras is a beautiful lodge and the facilities, food and drink are second to none. Added to that is the extreme warmth of the hosts and guides and a real home from home feel. It would be a hard pushed not to enjoy this lodge and all it has to offer.
The fishing can be breathtaking and even during the inevitable slow periods, that are part and parcel of all fishing, the surrounding wildlife and scenery and the knowledge that any second there could be the explosive take of a chrome silver leviathan trout of a liftetime, make fishing on the Rio Gallegos a very special thing to do.
I have now had several fish up to 23lbs and on the last night this year, lost a huge fish that felt and behaved far bigger than anything else I have hooked there before.
Plans are almost finalised for next year – hoping to hook the same fish with an extra years weight on it!!
If you are looking for a wonderful lodge with warmth friendliness comfort and great food coupled with quality fishing and unbelievable sized fish, Buitreras is certainly for you.
