Tackle and Technique

Our general recommendation is to bring a #4 weight rod as it will cover all fishing in all rivers. Floating shooting head lines is usually the most effective and what we fish most days but there are conditions and pools that requires sinking poly leaders and, or weighted flies. In terms of flies we suggest dry flies such as Chernobyl ant, small mouse patterns and elk caddies. Nymphs like hare’s ear nymph, copper john, and stoneflies for selective fish. However, the most important flies to bring are black streamers in various shapes and sizes. Wolly buggers and zonkers with bead heads are very effective in almost all conditions. There is very little wading involved when fishing as we try to stay as stealthy as possible and fish from the banks. Leader and tippet between 0.18-0.25 is the norm. Fish are normally not leader shy but you should consider fighting fish between 2-3 kg on any given day.
